Even after being betrayed and heartbroken, the clown still has to powder his face, put on his costume, and perform in front of the audience to make them laugh. The irony, the pain, the desperation, the heartbreaking lyrics and melodies – this aria demands far more than accurate singing. It is the emotion a tenor conveys that separates a true artist from someone who simply can sing.

Papi Domingo’s version is often considered the greatest. Not necessarily because he had the strongest vocals – in large live opera houses, he could not always sing as high or as powerfully as some others – but because his emotional acting and interpretation were unmatched, which is exactly what an aria like 「Vesti la giubba」 requires.

A similar aria is 「E lucevan le stelle（And the stars were shining)」 from Tosca, which is also considered one of Domingo’s greatest interpretations for the same reason. We will introduce it in future curations.
